 Naturally Negros

In June there was a celebration of Independence Day at the lagoon, it was short and simple, many came to sing wholeheartedly the Philippine National Anthem as the flag was raised at exactly eight in the morning,  boy scouts, girl scouts, police, army, teachers, government employees came for the said occasion.  It feels good to exercise our love for our country and our fellowmen, for above anything else , we have to patriotize our country , our heritage,  the place we go , the things we buy and eat.

Vikings prepared for the Independence and Father’s Day celebration with a special menu like Chef Jun’s chicken inasal potato salad, crab meat pasta, roast lamb in spice herb, roasted chicken in creamy basil, crab ginger and butter sauce, bacon wrapped honey and mustard pork loin by Chef’s Jogat and Chef Leo and crew.

The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution 44 years ago declaring every fifth of June as World Environment Day, it is but fitting to be at the right place on this day , enjoying the cool and less populated place like  Mabinay Springs, we stayed overnight and had fun dipping into the cold spring waters  where cascading  manmade pools were developed, the freshwater flows to the lagoon as its water level rises during the rainy season which is  best for kayaking.

Mayor Ernie ‘Jango’ Uy who turned 44 on the 18th had a vision for environmental awareness and promoting the caves and the springs in town for people to appreciate its natural resources when he started a s a young councillor then, today the places have transformed to be tourist friendly with a touch of sustainable tourism, this has created jobs with tour guides, resort workers . The spring is just a few meters from the main road where a bus can drop you off , and a tricycle ride towards the terminal when coming back. Safety being its priority, visitors undergo orientation to learn how to do caving before you visit caves. Mabinay is just three hours drive to the south, a non smoking town with simple facilities, Andrews Diner is a place that serves good food at a very affordable price. Gharie Caceres, the tourism officer has shown us the terminal, where an accommodation facility is available with function rooms for small meetings.

As the rainy season has started, this also reminded us of many activities in line for the month. The  20th Mudpack Festival themed ‘Art for Earth’  kicked off with the Drum Circle short film festival entitled ‘MUGNA’ at 5:00 pm , in partnership with the NCCA Cultural Project Teatrokon Theater Festival Earth Jam , the next day is a full day at the resort with the hataw sa mudpack at 7am, poster making for kids, a photo competition, a mass follows at 10 in the morning, tribal dance parade was scheduled at 1:30 in the afternoon , the drum beating competition, body painting for kidsand the tribal dance competition, there was a merry making and a sound off, plus  bands  entertained visitors at the resort. Other activities were body painting parade  and solo dance competition in the afternoon on  Sunday, June 19.

With the Provincial Governments’ thrust on promoting a sustainable healthy environment in Negros, the 24th Provincial Environment Week  began on the 18th of June with a football festival  and on the 19th the 1st Magestica Rage Trash Runway, Functional Trash Art Do It Yourself (Tires for Us) exhibit, and a Recycled Festival Costume Exhibit and a Wildlife Exhibit  at 888 Chinatown Event Center. A tree planting activity will be held at Brgy. Lantawan in Silay on the 21st and the 1st Negros Occidental Climate Change Summit at SMX Convention Center on June 22. There were other activities that took place.
With all these activities, it goes to show that Negrense are aware of a sustainable environment for  Negros Occidental, you can also do your share by taking your time and effort in protecting, enhancing  play a big role in the  development of  our environment following the 5 R’s such as Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rejuvenate
