Recently  the Province of Negros Occidental through the Environment Management Department celebrated the 10th  Provincial Wildlife Month with a wildlife culture contest. A float parade started early in the morning followed by  a  song and  dance competition participated by students from various schools in the province , they were dressed like birds, frogs, deers, cows and bats showing endemic species in Negros.

I had the chance to be judge in the said  event, the dance competition was fun where they were judged according to appearance, creativity and resourcefulness . They leaped like frogs, flew like birds and bats, some had fairies, farmers.

The songs were in English and the vernacular and was indeed entertaining as the message delivered was about the protection and importance of the animals in the wild.

We are lucky in Negros , we have the Negros Forest Ecological Foundation's Biodiversity Conservation Center and the Philippine Biodiversity Conservation Foundation Incorporated, two foundations working on the preservation of endemic species in the Philippines and  the protection of the animals is a priority. There is the  Philippine hornbill, one of the birds considered to be getting extinct,  at the NFEFI,  visayan leopard cats are also bred, one can find a bleeding heart pigeon, golden crowned flying fox,  tarictic horn bills, spotted deers,  warty pigs and many more.
