Negros Island's Chimney: Mount Kanlaon
Mount Kanlaon: a view from the Municipality of Moises Padilla
Known to be the highest peak in Central Visayas, Mount Kanlaon is about 24,577 hectares with an elevation of 2,456 meters or about 8,100 feet which is surrounded by the towns of Murcia, Bago,
La Carlota, San Carlos, La Castellana in Negros Occidental and
the City of Canlaon in Negros Oriental.
It is always fun to be motoring around the volcano when the sky is clear and its beauty is shown in different angles. Where forest cover is rich in natural resources from tobacco, rice, coffee, corn and other root crops are cultivated including fruit bearing trees, as you climb higher at an elevation of 4,000 ft. the forest is composed of very tall trees reaching a height of 120 ft. with shrubs, moss, and ferns and small palms. The higher the elevation the lesser the vegetation is, that is why when climbing the mountain one should be in proper
attire and shoes to protect trekkers from the heat of the sun or from being soaked when it rains. This is what makes the volcano interesting, its biodiversity with the presence of plants, trees and endemic species such as the bleeding heart pigeon, king fishers, tarictic hornbill, civet cat, leopard cats, hawk eagle, wild boars and spotted deer's .
The mountains in Negros Island is basically volcanic which is the reason why 60% of the land area is basically agricultural and dominantly planted with sugarcane, producing 50% of the sugar consumption of the Philippines.
