FARMTASTIC: NO ONE SHOULD GO HUNGRY

waiting for my ride

I have been travelling around the province the past few days on a fine week. The sun was out all the time and weather was fine and cool. Negros Occidental has a total land area of 792,607 hectares or about 375 kilometres long from Hinoba-an in the south to San Carlos to the north.

With more 13 cities and 19 municipalities, no doubt that this would fill up the calendar every month when we speak of festivals, be it about plants, trees, animals , lights or the arts . Recently, we took the day off for a visit to nearby farms for a familiarization tour, when visiting farms one should have a hand fan and a hat and possibly bring a shawl to cover your face from the heat of the sun and a bottle of water. Never ever forget to bring a camera with extra battery when on tour.

Tin hugs a tree
First stop was Owataks Farms via the Buro-Buro Farm  at Talisay passing through Alangilan in Bacolod, it’s a short drive to the east. At the farm we were met by Ms. Jocelyn Gito, she has been trained in farm guiding a few years back, there are herbs, cottages and a pool for swimming. We saw a lot of trees and a very nice activity would be to hug a tree or two, it was fun and my first time to do it, and makes you appreciate trees and nature more. On an ordinary day, one can take a jeep from Burgos market , choose the one that takes you to Brgy. Alangilan, then ride a tricycle for fifty pesos to the farm where you can taste some fruits in season, learn about farm life ,relax and breath fresh air. You can also buy some plants and vegetables if you happen to be there during harvest time.

Melba's Farm

Edmund Ornillo brought along a ‘canter’ for us to ride on as we travelled on farm roads towards  Melba’s Farm, they have a huge cabana with two bedrooms and a swimming pool with a view of the city on a clear day. This is also a good place for family day tours or overnight stay especially on weekends and a full moon. They allow visitors to bring food and you can  have them cooked by the staff. Next stop was a visit Guerrero Farm which was nearby, they have horses, a chapel, a pool and the very colourful canteen, they serve really good food from the farm and they have  lots of flowers and ornamental plants plus a refreshing  view of the mountain. It is a plus to visit  farms in Talisay when fruits are in season from August to November, one can experience an eat all you can rambutan at JKN Farms at Concepcion and take home a choice of  lanzones, durian and  marang.
