The 22nd Panaad sa Negros Festival was generally peaceful and has drawn a lot of visitors recently with the 32 Destination Pavilions well decorated plus in house guides, a display showcasing their culture and heritage and pride of place, and lots of souvenir items to shop. With cleanliness being a priority program, each lgu had proper waste bins and the surroundings were well landscaped. Various bands played in nightly shows and activities within each local government at the Panaad Park. Sagay City and Calatrava were awarded as this years’ Best Destination Pavilions with Silay, Talisay, Bago City and Cadiz City amongst the top five with Binalbagan, Murcia, Hinigaran, and Toboso in the Municipal level.

Pulupandan were adjudged the Cleanest Pavilions, with Cadiz and Calatrava who also received the award for Best Food Security Corner. Raymund Bayot was the curator for the Balay Kalamay themed ‘the camarin’ telling the story of the muscovado mill pronounced ‘MOOSKOVADO’

The festival judges this ye==had a great time around the park and they all observed an improvement of events and pavilions, even the festival dances have been recorded and uploaded online generating hundreds of thumbs up in the social networks. In fact, right after the closing ceremony the first Negros Drumbeating Competition was held with the Himayaan Patik Kawayan tribe emerging as first place winner using bamboo as drumsticks, it was indeed a success with nine competing tribes, and this was spearheaded by Ms. Patricia Bilbao. At the closing ceremony, all the winners of the various talent competitions performed with Paindisindis sa Binalaybay winner Nicole Obado Tolentino of Kabankalan charming her way with the audience and was well applauded. Rondalla competition champ for this year is the group from the Municipality of Candoni with Maestro Warlito Loja, another crowd drawer is the Philippine Folk Dance competition with Murcia winning the Rural category dancing to the Pasikat na Baso and Himamaylan City winning the Maria Clara category with the Pitik Mingaw dance.

I also chanced upon my students from CSA-B  Carl Terense Belarmino and  Ma. Fil Therese Rile, who won third place representing Bacolod City in the Latin Dance Amateur category.

Lin-ay sang Negros winners Blessie joy Zayco of Himamaylan, Jennel Lacsina of Sagay and this year’s queen, Jessica M. Zevenbergen were also presented that day. All sectors in Negros had a part in Panaad, it created jobs, generated income with an increase of 20% in sales compared to last year’s celebration. At 22, Panaad sa Negros Festival has grown like a woman, chasing a dream and realizing its development being one of the top three festivals in the Philippines.
